Product Development Engineer
About Microsol
Microsol develops tools to characterise and predict the behaviour of pharmaceutical aerosols, to support formulation development for orally inhaled and nasal drug products. Our platform connects laboratory and simulation: single-particle measurement, built around an electrodynamic balance, trains physics-based models of aerosol behaviour, and the models direct the next measurements.
The role
We are looking for an engineer to take our aerosol measurement instrument from a working laboratory prototype to a commercial product, built in low volume to a high specification. You will lead this work within a team of scientists and engineers, with the latitude to revisit the instrument’s architecture where that improves performance, reliability or ease of manufacture.
Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering of the instrument from prototype to commercial product.
- Review the system architecture and the allocation of functions across mechanical, electronic and software domains, and redesign where appropriate.
- Improve performance, reliability and serviceability.
- Apply design for manufacture and assembly suited to low-volume, high-specification builds.
- Plan and carry out design verification and validation.
- Work to applicable regulatory and quality standards, and maintain the technical documentation.
- Work closely with the science team to preserve measurement performance through design changes.
- Establish repeatable builds, including jigs, fixtures, test rigs and build documentation.
- Contribute to risk management, planning and milestone delivery.
Who we are looking for
The role sits where three disciplines overlap: mechatronics, systems engineering and product engineering. Candidates who are strong in two of these are well suited, and experience across all three is ideal. Product engineering matters most.
- At least four years of industrial experience taking physical products from prototype to commercial release, ideally in scientific instrumentation, medical devices or comparable specialist hardware.
- Experience in mechatronics (mechanical, electronics and PCB, and embedded software design) or in systems engineering (owning product architecture and trade-offs across domains).
- PCB design taken through to a released product.
- Embedded C, C++ or Rust on microcontrollers. Python is desirable.
- 3D CAD, such as SolidWorks.
- A degree in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
Also valuable
- Design verification and validation, risk management, and standards such as ISO 13485, IEC 61010 or IEC 60601.
Working at Microsol
You will join a small team with direct access to decision-making and considerable scope to shape your role as the company grows. The role is based in our laboratory at North Gate, Filton Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, with some hybrid working negotiable. Occasional travel to clients and conferences is expected, and expenses are covered. Some overtime may be needed to meet external deadlines.
This is a permanent, employed position. We are not able to consider freelance, contract or agency applications.
Equal opportunities
We aim to attract applicants from the widest possible range of backgrounds, and we are committed to an inclusive working environment. We particularly welcome applications from Black African, Black Caribbean and other minority ethnic groups, who are currently under-represented in our industry.
How to apply
Send your CV and a short cover statement to [email protected], with the role title in the subject line. Tell us why you are applying and how you would contribute. If you would like to talk before applying, write to the same address.
We are interviewing on a rolling basis, so early applications are welcome.
